Jenin refugee camp: The refugee camp located within the municipal boundaries of the city of Jenin was established in 1953. Most of the residents are Arab refugees who fled from the Galilee area in northern Israel during the War of Independence in 1948. Jenin has a long history of violence and terrorism. While under British rule in 1938 the assassination of a British district commissioner by a Palestinian Arab terrorist from Jenin sparked a strong military response from the British mandate government, including 'Demolishing the homes of Arab civilians... shooting handcuffed prisoners... forcing local Arabs to test areas where mines may have been planted..." The Jenin refugee camp has an estimated population of 14,000 Jenin, the blunder of Kofe Anan and the UN:
